There isn't a sanitary sewer system in the Village of Royal, Illinois. Individual septic systems support the homes of the Village's 300 residents. Two downtown businesses used one septic tank until one was sold. The new owner wanted to remodel the building, which required a permit from the Champaign Urbana Public Health District. To get the permit, the building required updated waste disposal, and the downtown lot sizes prevented individual septic tanks and adsorption fields. The Village hired Fehr Graham to develop a disposal system to serve the downtown commercial businesses with the potential to add other parts of the Village later.

Adding this system allowed the Village to attract a full menu restaurant and keep its original sports bar, which offered a limited menu. The new system is designed to easily expand to accommodate all seven downtown commercial properties, without requiring each to invest in their own disposal systems.
