Fehr Graham, a leading engineering and environmental firm, has successfully helped two clients secure federal grants, enhancing roadway safety.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is allocating $813 million in funding through President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, designated for 385 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grants. The grants are awarded to regional, local and Tribal communities and support implementation, planning and demonstration projects that improve safety and prevent deaths and injuries on the nation's roads.
The City of Freeport, Illinois, will receive $400,000, and the City of Center Point, Iowa, will get $100,000. Both municipalities will use the funds to develop comprehensive safety action plans.
Freeport will develop a Citywide action plan to prevent roadway fatalities and injuries. Freeport's strategy will address areas of concern, incorporate public input on safety issues and consider project stakeholder comments. The Action Plan will reduce serious injuries or fatalities from transportation-related accidents.
Center Point will address the Franklin Street/Lewis Access Road corridor from the Interstate 380 interchange to the City limits. Significant safety improvements will be made to foster meaningful change for the community.
SS4A grants have provided $1.7 billion in direct funding to more than 1,000 communities. Combined, they will improve road safety planning for about 70% of the nation's population.

We are acting to confront the crisis of safety on our nation's roads, helping communities work to reduce traffic deaths to the only acceptable number: zero." |
Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Transportation Secretary
This funding will help communities develop road safety action plans and improve unsafe roadway corridors by implementing effective interventions. These funds can also be used to test safety features, like separated bicycle lanes or curb extensions at intersections.
The next round of SS4A funding is open to applicants in February 2024.
